Fly to the city of Sapporo, capital of the northern island of Hokkaido and ascend to the Okurayama viewing point for sweeping views from the Sapporo Winter Olympics ski jump. Sample some of the local beer before heading to a restaurant for a Genghis Khan dinner, a Sapporo specialty of barbecued lamb. In Hakodate, visit the bustling asaichi, or morning market, and browse the many shops and stalls selling fresh local produce, seafood and souvenirs. Continue to Hiraizumi to explore the peaceful Chusonji Temple, known for its beautiful gold leaf-covered hall, before boarding the bullet train to the culturally rich town of Nikko. Explore the beautiful surrounds of Nikko National Park and visit Toshogu Shrine, then travel by road from Tokyo to Mount Fuji, where you’ll ascend 2,400 metres to the iconic 5th Station. Your journey ends in Kyoto, a city of tranquil temples and sublime gardens.
